Noise Level Regulations in India and Types of Generators based on Noise Levels
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has laid down permissible noise level for various zones/areas in India. It is important that you understand these limits while renting a generator. The CPCB has classified areas into four zones. And each zone has different permissible noise levels for day time and night time measured in dB(A) leq.
dB(A) Leq denotes the time weighted average of the level of sound in decibels on scale A which is relatable to human hearing. A “decibel” is a unit in which noise is measured. “A”, in dB(A) Leq, denotes the frequency weighting in the measurement of noise and corresponds to frequency response characteristics of the human ear. Leq: It is an energy mean of the noise level over a specified period.
The noise levels in any area / zone shall not exceed the ambient air quality standards in respect of noise as specified in the schedule released by CPCB.
Ambient Air Quality Standards in respect of Noise
A. Industrial Area
Day Time: 75 dB(A) Leq
Night Time: 70 dB(A) Leq
B. Commercial Area
Day Time: 65 dB(A) Leq
Night Time: 55 dB(A) Leq
C. Residential Area
Day Time: 55 dB(A) Leq
Night Time: 45 dB(A) Leq
D. Silence Zone
Day Time: 50 dB(A) Leq
Night Time: 40 dB(A) Leq
Day Time means 6:00AM to 10:00PM and Night Time means 10:00 PM to 6:00AM. Silence zone is an area comprising not less than 100 metres around hospitals, educational institutions, courts, religious places or any other area which is declared as such by the competent authority. Mixed categories of areas may be declared as one of the four above mentioned categories by the competent authority.
